Stepping up our game
Designed to be one of the best centres of its kind in the world and the centrepiece of the inaugural European Games, we were thrilled to be appointed to work on the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan as project and construction manager. Our role was to coordinate the design, procurement and construction. This gave us the perfect opportunity to showcase the lessons learnt on delivering similar structures for other global sporting events. The 9,000-seater arena was completed in February 2014 and opened to great acclaim by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev.
Balancing the beam
The £120 million arena is one of only a handful of bespoke gymnastics venues in the world, and is designed to have the flexibility to host other large-scale events. As a publicly funded project the budget was critical, and that is where we could really help the client by successfully identifying £12 million of construction savings.
Extensive stakeholder management was crucial with all end-users considered in the design. This coupled with our experience of what is required for international sporting competitions meant that we were able to deliver a world class stadium complete with 2,500 square metre training hall, medical centre and 16,000 square metre landscaped gardens.
Raising the bar
One area in which we could really add value was health and safety. The delivery of the project has been credited with raising the standard of health and safety for the entire region. This was the first of our international projects to adopt our industry leading ‘Safety first. Second nature.’ programme with great success.
