With a three metre high perimeter fence, its own power supply and two submerged floors, banking giant Santander’s twin data centres are built to withstand any imaginable disaster. Appointed to deliver the multi-million pound buildings, our remit expanded to include a full integrated service as project, cost and construction managers. Delivery was challenging, but we rewarded the client’s faith in us when we finished four days ahead of schedule.
Two years into the mammoth project our role extended to include construction management. We needed to gather momentum to ensure completion could be achieved as soon as possible. Adding 51 managers to the team, we engaged the supply chain, winning them over to our vision for delivery. This seamlessly integrated team worked round-the-clock, with 925 people on site at peak productivity. We absorbed 10 weeks (£36 million) of additional work and constructed £85 million of work in nine months. An achievement we are very proud of.
“Mace provided invaluable support to the client throughout the site procurement, planning consent period, and design phase and built up genuine trust with Santander. Members of the PMO from both project management and cost consultancy integrated within the CM team on site to provide continuity and historic advice. This demonstrated that colleagues from different parts of the business working together can deliver a £230m facility aligned with the client’s original aspirations”
We delivered award-winning health and safety. Our British Safety Council audit results were the highest that year and we were runners-up on the Considerate Constructors Most Considerate Site of the Year 2014.
Working with the local council and colleges we created job opportunities, apprenticeships and a ‘Women in Construction’ event for young people hoping to join our industry. Project Fox was a ground-breaking project for us and is a fantastic demonstration of what can be achieved through an integrated team and collaboration.
